Summary of Position: 

Zelis is looking for a talented, SQL Database Administrator to fill a new position within the organization.  The Database Administrator will pioneer and maintain all processes and procedures related to the administration of our MS SQL Server database.  This is a very hands-on technical role, spending the majority of the time measuring and tuning system performance and working with the development team designing and implementing new innovative products. The candidate should be a dedicated team player, the type that others want to work with and desires to work with others to deliver quality services.  This role requires in depth problem solving skills and a craving for learning. This role will also have an opportunity to learn new database technologies as Zelis develops new products for the market. 


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Management of databases, interfaces, and reporting processes ensuring data integrity, data validity, security, efficiency, and accessibility
  • Day to day administration of database products that includes the execution of database change requests, user provisioning, monitoring of logs and system activity required to ensure a stable database environment
  • Installing, upgrading, configuring, and maintaining database software
  • Involved in trouble shooting and fixing day-to-day problems on the databases supporting applications on 24/7 schedule, supporting production environment during non-business hours
  • Provide database support for application upgrades and project go-lives
  • Provide technical solutions that solve business problems
  • Maintain existing database backup solutions to provide timely system recovery minimizing loss of revenue due to a system outage
  • Competent & professional customer service skills to resolve issues swiftly and accurately to meet customer needs
  • Technical support to application developers / business users. Train or mentor other coworkers in the proper use of the database model and advanced query techniques
  • Documenting all the changes/issues/resolutions
  • Attend appropriate training to stay current with new technology and methods

Education & Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other four year degree with significant IS experience OR equivalent experience
  • 6+ years' experience functioning as a Database Administrator for MS SQL Server
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 2012, 2014, and 2016 database administration
  • SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services)
  • SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services)
  • Must have completed several upgrade/migration projects
  • Ability to install and configure new MSSQL Servers
  • Ability to troubleshoot MSSQL Server performance issues to including server configuration, indexes, and queries. A broad range of database administration technical skills with a desire to develop and expand those skills
  • Implementing and supporting log shipping, transactional replication, database mirroring and Always On
  • SQL Server Clustering and Windows Failover Clustering
  • Experience with scripting in T-SQL, Windows Powershell, and C#
  • Self-motivated to improve the environment and enhance customer experience



  • Implementing and supporting transparent data encryption (TDE) and secure socket layer (SSL)
  • Windows Server 2003, 2008 and 2012
  • MSSQL Database security
  • Proficient in administration and management of hosted Windows computing environments
  • Experience developing and managing stored procedures.
  • Experience with third-party backup and HA tools (SQLSafe, LiteSpeed, DoubleTake, redgate)
